When Did We Fade?

Illustrated by Jana Ames: Copyright: January, 2026. Edited by Fatima Hijas, Translated by Sarah Sahboun, Designed by Eloise Shir-Juen Leigh.

Originally written in Arabic, this personal story captures the poignancy of strength in Palestinian society and thirsts after the “spring of tenderness,” embodied in motherhood. Deprived of existence, trapped within a brutal containment system, the soul finds its strength in tender bonds that break without warning.

Editions: English and Arabic.

Bilal Ahmed is a university student from Gaza. He writes about life, people, and the experiences of his city. His words express hope despite hardship and carry genuine emotions drawn from daily life in Palestine.

Excerpt from the text

“One thing that deeply affect me was the bombing of a neighbor’s house around two in the morning on December 12, 2023. I woke up to the shaking as if my own house had been blown off. Having no idea of what was going on, I rushed to my mother to ask what had been bombed, but she responded that she did not know either. We looked from the balcony overlooking the street, but saw only clouds of dust and the acrid smell of gunpowder filling the air.”
