Hot Off the Press
A Drop of Grief, by Haneen Alisawi
We’re excited to announce the launch of another breathtaking, original zine by an author in Gaza. In this twenty-four page zine, eleven poems provide a window view into a soul willing itself not to break while witnessing a world of death, condemned upon Gaza. Inquisitive, insightful, inventive, and intelligent, Alisawi’s words sketch lines of perspective for an entire generation of Palestinian youth, forsaken by the world.
“I’m trying my hardest to keep myself sane:
When I see a mother’s pale face,
one that lost its radiance once the war began,
one that aged years in just a few months…”—War’s Stoic Sanity
A Drop of Grief is comprised of short and long poems, whose lines become battle grounds between intellect/sanity and raw emotion. The title of the zine draws from the shortest and final poem in the collection.
Alisawi’s original voice pairs beautifully with playful, imaginative illustrations by Alice Schiavone. Girl-like faces, drawn with elements of surrealism, depict the complexities of navigating trauma in youth.
