Palestine Museum Scotland is hosting a zine workshop as part of events associated with the exhibition, Words that Break the Siege - Writing as Resistance, on display from April 18th-May 3rd. The exhibition features artwork and zines from the Zines from Gaza project.

Zines from Gaza brings together a grassroots publishing initiative by writers in Gaza with volunteer editors, artists, designers and distributers across the globe, to produce zines that can be sold to support the writers and their families.

Zines (self-published magazines) are part of the rich history of radical self-publishing. They are small-scale publications that can be made by anyone. Often they are the only records of subcultures, countercultures, and alternative movements. Zines are used for creative expression and to share information, distribute resources and build community – on topics from fan culture to social justice.

The workshop will be run by Glasgow Zine Library. GZL is the largest independent zine library in the UK with an international collection of over 4,000 zines and was founded to preserve these stories, create opportunities to tell new ones, and celebrate DIY arts culture and zine heritage. At the workshop you will get an introduction to zines, a discussion about zines as a tool for resistance, and then participants will be shown how to make their own.

The workshop is open to makers over 16 years - no experience necessary!

All materials will be provided - just bring your passions, enthusiasm and creativity!

Survivor Memory

This piece took three weeks to write.

Three weeks of journaling, remembering, and sitting with memories I did not choose, memories shaped by war.

I write this as a survivor,

not because I escaped death,

but because I continue to live with what remained after it.

What does survival mean to me?

The moment this question was asked, that night returned to me.

The eleventh night of the war.

We were informed that the mosque near our home would be targeted.

Everyone sat waiting:

whispered prayers, opened windows, and took precautions every Gazan household heeds before the warning call.

As for me,

sleep overtook me.

I slept like a child who does not understand war,

who does not know the weight of waiting for an explosion.

When I woke up,

the mosque had been bombed.

In that moment, I realized that I had survived.

Not a survival of the body,

but a survival from fear, from that terrifying sound which, had I heard it,

would have crept into my heart and settled there forever.

I survived because I did not hear it.

And I survived because my heart, that night,

remained asleep.

Yellow

Today, I woke up hating the color yellow.

I hate the occupation.

And I hate this entire world.

Today, I feel that Gaza is shrinking.

Shrinking day after day,

as if it is being pressed between hands we cannot stop.

How long will we keep watching?

How long will we stand powerless,

counting the days,

owning nothing but observation.

Death

In the early days of the war, the days were not easy for me.

I will never forget the news of the martyrdom of Rawan, the daughter of a family friend.

That day, I was sleeping in a corner of the house we decided was the safest.

We do not know why.

There are no standards.

But my family felt it.

A house near ours was targeted.

I felt startled.

I could not get used to that sound.

It confused me,

terrified my heart,

and made me cry hysterically.

After every strike,

family members tried to ease the horror of the sound, even though fear lived inside all of us.

But absorbing shock differs from one person to another.

Hours after that bombing,

we received the news about Rawan.

I did not believe it.

I felt trapped in a disturbing nightmare,

waiting to wake from it.

But I did not wake up.

Her mother did not know.

She had no close person except my mother.

My mother was the one who told her,

and prepared her for the news.

I was nineteen years old that day.

It was not the first war I had lived through,

but it was the hardest.

I asked my mother:

How does a person feel at the moment of death?

She answered me, like a needle’s prick:

“Death has become salvation, those who die are the ones who survive now, my daughter.”

Sometimes I Want to Go Away

Do you, who live outside, feel fear when you go to sleep?

Do you feel afraid when your children go to school?

Destruction surrounds you,

in every direction your eyes fall.

How can you live a normal life

in a place filled with destruction?

Do you ever feel the urge to change something in your life,

only to realize you are living under occupation?

Here, we are treated according to the occupier’s will,

handled like marionette dolls,

moved and stopped at their command.

The Sound of Displacement

The sound of transportation is the sound all displaced people hate.

We hate the driver,

and we hate his assistant, the one standing at the back of the vehicle, calling out the names of places.

Places I am forced to live in.

Places that never embraced me the way my place did.

Gaza is the place I belong to.

The war does not end.

The moment I hear the sound of bombing,

even after the announcement of a so-called ceasefire,

all these thoughts rush through my mind like a fast, uncontrollable reel.

Because for survivors,

the war does not end when the bombs stop.

It continues in the sound,

in the memory,

and in the body that never forgets.

Noor Arif is a business administration student from Gaza who believes that education comes above everything. She works as a social media coordinator with the Gaza Great Minds School and as a writer. She uses her love for writing and social media to express what she lives through in her own way and to raise the voices of Gaza’s children. We’re catching up on all the zines launched this month. Congratulations, Mohammed Al-Bardawili and his team on the release of this beautiful zine, illustrated by Casper. Insightful and earnest, as writings from Gaza tend to be, this is an illuminating work.

Zine Description

An earnest reflection upon universal suffering through the telescopic traumas of Gaza. Drones light the night, replacing shooting stars, while residents shelter in the bareness of dust and sky. Words of compassion, of deep contemplation, roam the wreckage in search of answers. Logic leads to humanity, its pride and stubbornness, its destructive capacity to walk the earth like a breed of monsters, incapable of witnessing the future because they bury it in Gaza with their own hands.

About the Author

Mohammed Al-Bardawili is a Palestinian writer, born in 1998, who has lived through multiple wars in Gaza. He completed his studies in English Literature in 2022 at Al-Azhar University, Gaza.

He has worked to support his family of seven, serving as a digital marketer and content writer in both Arabic and English. He lost his job during the war and continues to struggle, striving for the wellbeing of himself, his family, and his community.

Driven by a determination to amplify the voices of his people, Mohammed seeks to carry their stories beyond the borders of this small city, hoping that the world will hear, witness, and share the weight of the suffering that burdens Gaza.

A belated congratulations to Samar AlGhussein on the release of her zine, The Fifth Shadow of the Sun. This original work of poetry and art is the third zine in our 2026 catalogue. A splash of yellow in a bouquet of flowers makes this cover stand out. Of course, it can also be printed in monochrome.

Zine Description

The Fifth Shadow of the Sun is a collection of poems written during the genocide in Gaza. While my soul was besieged by death from all sides, I saw poetry as our only means of immortalizing our lives. As I try to escape a reality riddled with destruction, we see that death is a plague that has infected even our vivid imaginations. Therefore, I share some of my poems, not only as a witness to the genocide, but also as a survivor of death.

About the Author

Samar Al Ghussein is a Palestinian writer and poet from Gaza, interested in literature and all different forms of art. Her works focus on describing the beauty hidden in tragedy. Samar considers poetry a means to immortalize our lives. She participated in an anthology in Italy, and her works have been published in several magazines such as MPT Magazine, Al-Ayyam Al-Arabiya Magazine, and Arablit Magazine.

From the Archives : Jake Skeets : Eyes Bottle Dark with a Mouthful of Flowers

What does it mean to archive a place while it's being erased?
How can imagination be both rigorous and resistant?
What stories emerge when we write from the perspective of land, concrete, and seeds rather than only human voices?

This panel brings together the Gazan authors behind Indicia's special three-story zine issue to discuss their experimental approaches to documenting, imagining, and witnessing Gaza. Across three distinct, yet connected stories, the authors explore an alternative timeline where collective land systems continued uninterrupted, the material truth and deception of concrete infrastructure, and the perspectives of non-human others who live alongside us in silence.

Rather than providing a testimony, these zines practice what the authors call "grounded imagination" -creative work deeply rooted in research, oral history, ecological knowledge, and material reality. Together, they refuse the flattening of Gaza into a single story, instead offering multiple temporalities, scales, and perspectives that cannot be reconciled into one neat label.

For the last few weeks, I have been working on the German translation of this
beautiful zine. Shahd’s tender poems are filled with love and longing, especially for quiet, for silence. We often say, “I just want my peace and quiet,” but translating this felt like getting to the core of what it means to not have this peace, to not have comforting silence. The world is so loud, especially right now—and it is even louder in Gaza, where the noise of war is a constant companion:

Shahd makes you feel in her poems what noise and darkness can do to a
person: “Darkness fills everything”. And in making us feel, we learn, but only if we read and listen closely: “A moment where silence wasn’t born from death, but from calm.”

So much of translation is not only about finding words, it’s about learning new ones and new contexts. Shahd writes about food (maqluba, dukkah, kabsa); looking up names and pictures conjures up a whole world that I as a reader/translator am gracefully invited to be a part of. She has a great sense of humour that pops up in several poems: “Did you steal the cookies too? What crime did the cookies commit…?” There are many lines that feel like small prayers:

Mariam, who is proofreading, sends me notes about the difference between the call to prayer and the prayer itself, about religious connotations; she suggests other words, clearer ones, better ones. This back and forth of notes is another connection, another layer, both of us holding up Shahd’s words, creating bridges to the other language.

How wonderful it would be to have pupils and students at schools and unis translate these poems- and through the translations to enable them to attempt an understanding of the connections we can forge, the words we can find, the words we need to find in every language to convey what is happening in the world. By naming things, we pull them out into the open, by translating them, we make the words of others shine, so that they can be shared with more people, who will talk about them, pass them on, write about them, sing about them, draw about them, be inspired to help and learn:

We are all the guardians of language and to make sure words are not lost, we must use them, speak them, write them- in whatever language we have.
It´s an honour to be trusted with someone else’s words, to try and find a rhythm in your own language that works, to write something new without losing what the original text is saying. To close with Shahd’s words:

About the author:

She was recently published in Revista Gaceta, where her work was translated into Spanish. Marah has also participated with Arablit in a literary translation program. At this time, Marah was supposed to be in her second year of university, but couldn’t enroll as she only recently finished her high school exams due to the genocide.

Our final zine of the year was one of our first projects, but shortly after work began, the author’s mother and brother (Allah yerhamhoum) were killed by an Israeli strike. The loss shook everyone in the collective, and work on this zine carried forward slowly under the weight of sorrow. Please, when you read it, do not offer sadness and pity in return. Take action. Lubna Ahmad Abu Dahrouj is a writer and poet from the Gaza Strip, where she currently resides. Proudly, she is a student of the late Dr. Refaat Alareer and carries forward his legacy through the power of words. With a deep belief in the transformative strength of writing, Lubna weaves poems and articles that amplify the voiceless, honor the martyrs, and bear witness to the resilience and struggles of her people. Her work is a testament to the enduring spirit of those who live on through the stories she tells.
