Refaat Ibrahim is a Palestinian writer and journalist from Gaza who focuses on humanitarian, political, and societal issues in Palestine, highlighting his own experiences of life under war and occupation. His work has appeared in Al Jazeera English, The Washington Report, and other publications. His work aims to uncover the daily suffering Palestinians endure, beyond statistics and headlines, to center the heart of the human experience in Palestine. To Refaat, writing is an act of resistance and means of documenting a living memory, a way of confronting, forgetting, and conveying the truth to the world.

A few weeks ago, I had the privilege of illustrating one of Refaat Ibrahim’s zines, titled “Re-engineering Consciousness.” Refaat’s texts are brutal in their clarity and observation. They open the reader’s eyes without pathos or sentimentality, reporting on the suffering and struggle for survival of the Palestinian people, culminating in the ongoing genocide in Gaza.

My drive was to transfer that clarity onto paper. For this, I chose charcoal as my medium of choice, also because coal, as a remnant of something burned, seemed symbolically fitting for the suffering and destruction in Gaza.

The first of the four essays in the zine deals with the killing of civilians at the so-called “aid sites” of the GHF, recounting Refaat’s experiences there and the death of his friend Nader. It moved me deeply on a personal level, because I too have a friend in Gaza who nearly fell victim to this death trap and has since been battling the daily consequences of his injuries. One only needs to imagine people driven to the brink of madness by weeks of deliberate starvation, to the point where they would rather risk being shot than return to their families without bread. My illustration therefore shows the hand of a dying person, still clutching the little piece of bread for which he gave his life.

The second essay, “Hell Behind Bars,” is about the Israeli torture prisons where Palestinians are subjected to unbearable suffering through torture, sexualized violence, hunger, and inhumane detention conditions. Refaat’s text is an indictment, directed also at international bodies and governments that remain silent in the face of these now well-documented atrocities and war crimes.

As an artist, I have been grappling since the beginning of the genocide with the question of how—and whether—one can do justice to this suffering in art, especially when one is not personally affected. Ultimately, one remains an outside observer, no matter how deeply one engages with the subject matter. I believe that the zines from Coastal Lines Press have found an answer to this question. They place the voices of those affected—the people who must experience this genocide firsthand—at the center. For us as illustrators, therefore, the primary task is to support these texts visually, to translate their essence into the visual realm, and to make them a vehicle for the eye and the imagination.

When I sent my drawings to layout designer Veronica Petrie, she drew a parallel to Goya’s “Disasters of War.” Together we developed the idea of supplementing the drawings with hastily applied charcoal strokes and smudges, giving Refaat Ibrahim’s zine the aesthetic of a “Diary of the Genocide.” And I think that is also what makes Refaat’s texts so powerful: it is the unadorned truth, bearing witness, documenting so that future generations may remember. But it is also a sharp indictment of those who silence and downplay the suffering of Palestinians. In his fourth essay, the author accuses Israel of not only killing people in Gaza but also seeking to destroy Palestinian identity. “The goal is to turn them into beings without dignity, identity or hope.” For me, Refaat reclaims this identity through his texts. He shows that the dead are not just nameless numbers, that the soul of Palestine cannot simply be erased. This is “re-engineering consciousness” precisely.

Refaat subverts the term by turning it against its oppressors: while the genocide seeks to dismantle Palestinian humanity and memory, Refaat’s work reconstructs it. By documenting the specific names, stories, and dignities of those targeted, he refuses the reduction of Palestinians to mere victims or statistics. Instead, he engineers a new consciousness; one rooted in resistance, remembrance, and an unbreakable sense of self; proving that identity survives even when bodies do not.

When the Ordinary Becomes Extraordinary is a reflective writing workshop that invited participants to pause and look again at the ordinary moments that quietly shape our lives.

Through a short visual reflection, guided writing exercises, and the creation of personal gratitude jars, participants explore how loss and interruption can shift our awareness of everyday experiences, electricity, sunlight, markets, friendship, and the small routines we often overlook.

The workshop create a space for noticing, remembering, and writing from awareness rather than from forced optimism. Participants write about the things they once took for granted and reflected on how these ordinary elements carry meaning, memory, and resilience.

Together, we practiced slowing down, observing with intention, and transforming simple moments into writing.

No previous writing experience needed.

Congratulations, Lama Alhazarin and her team, on the release of this stunning zine, illustrated by Lama M. The virtual launch was hosted by Sidhe Press on April 12. Since its release, the zine has been translated into German, with French and Slovenian translations in progress.

About the Author

Lama Alharazin is 24 years old. She studied English Literature and Translation at the Islamic University of Gaza, where she got her degree in September 2023, and used to live in Gaza City. She now lives in Al-Mawasi and is planning to continue her education in the UK or Ireland. This is Lama´s first zine, she is working on another one with Coastal Lines Press and one with Sídhe Press. She writes to make sense of what happened and to reach other people with her words.

Palestine Museum Scotland is hosting a zine workshop as part of events associated with the exhibition, Words that Break the Siege - Writing as Resistance, on display from April 18th-May 3rd. The exhibition features artwork and zines from the Zines from Gaza project.

Zines from Gaza brings together a grassroots publishing initiative by writers in Gaza with volunteer editors, artists, designers and distributers across the globe, to produce zines that can be sold to support the writers and their families.

Zines (self-published magazines) are part of the rich history of radical self-publishing. They are small-scale publications that can be made by anyone. Often they are the only records of subcultures, countercultures, and alternative movements. Zines are used for creative expression and to share information, distribute resources and build community – on topics from fan culture to social justice.

The workshop will be run by Glasgow Zine Library. GZL is the largest independent zine library in the UK with an international collection of over 4,000 zines and was founded to preserve these stories, create opportunities to tell new ones, and celebrate DIY arts culture and zine heritage. At the workshop you will get an introduction to zines, a discussion about zines as a tool for resistance, and then participants will be shown how to make their own.

The workshop is open to makers over 16 years - no experience necessary!

All materials will be provided - just bring your passions, enthusiasm and creativity!

Survivor Memory

This piece took three weeks to write.

Three weeks of journaling, remembering, and sitting with memories I did not choose, memories shaped by war.

I write this as a survivor,

not because I escaped death,

but because I continue to live with what remained after it.

What does survival mean to me?

The moment this question was asked, that night returned to me.

The eleventh night of the war.

We were informed that the mosque near our home would be targeted.

Everyone sat waiting:

whispered prayers, opened windows, and took precautions every Gazan household heeds before the warning call.

As for me,

sleep overtook me.

I slept like a child who does not understand war,

who does not know the weight of waiting for an explosion.

When I woke up,

the mosque had been bombed.

In that moment, I realized that I had survived.

Not a survival of the body,

but a survival from fear, from that terrifying sound which, had I heard it,

would have crept into my heart and settled there forever.

I survived because I did not hear it.

And I survived because my heart, that night,

remained asleep.

Yellow

Today, I woke up hating the color yellow.

I hate the occupation.

And I hate this entire world.

Today, I feel that Gaza is shrinking.

Shrinking day after day,

as if it is being pressed between hands we cannot stop.

How long will we keep watching?

How long will we stand powerless,

counting the days,

owning nothing but observation.

Death

In the early days of the war, the days were not easy for me.

I will never forget the news of the martyrdom of Rawan, the daughter of a family friend.

That day, I was sleeping in a corner of the house we decided was the safest.

We do not know why.

There are no standards.

But my family felt it.

A house near ours was targeted.

I felt startled.

I could not get used to that sound.

It confused me,

terrified my heart,

and made me cry hysterically.

After every strike,

family members tried to ease the horror of the sound, even though fear lived inside all of us.

But absorbing shock differs from one person to another.

Hours after that bombing,

we received the news about Rawan.

I did not believe it.

I felt trapped in a disturbing nightmare,

waiting to wake from it.

But I did not wake up.

Her mother did not know.

She had no close person except my mother.

My mother was the one who told her,

and prepared her for the news.

I was nineteen years old that day.

It was not the first war I had lived through,

but it was the hardest.

I asked my mother:

How does a person feel at the moment of death?

She answered me, like a needle’s prick:

“Death has become salvation, those who die are the ones who survive now, my daughter.”

Sometimes I Want to Go Away

Do you, who live outside, feel fear when you go to sleep?

Do you feel afraid when your children go to school?

Destruction surrounds you,

in every direction your eyes fall.

How can you live a normal life

in a place filled with destruction?

Do you ever feel the urge to change something in your life,

only to realize you are living under occupation?

Here, we are treated according to the occupier’s will,

handled like marionette dolls,

moved and stopped at their command.

The Sound of Displacement

The sound of transportation is the sound all displaced people hate.

We hate the driver,

and we hate his assistant, the one standing at the back of the vehicle, calling out the names of places.

Places I am forced to live in.

Places that never embraced me the way my place did.

Gaza is the place I belong to.

The war does not end.

The moment I hear the sound of bombing,

even after the announcement of a so-called ceasefire,

all these thoughts rush through my mind like a fast, uncontrollable reel.

Because for survivors,

the war does not end when the bombs stop.

It continues in the sound,

in the memory,

and in the body that never forgets.

Noor Arif is a business administration student from Gaza who believes that education comes above everything. She works as a social media coordinator with the Gaza Great Minds School and as a writer. She uses her love for writing and social media to express what she lives through in her own way and to raise the voices of Gaza’s children. We’re catching up on all the zines launched this month. Congratulations, Mohammed Al-Bardawili and his team on the release of this beautiful zine, illustrated by Casper. Insightful and earnest, as writings from Gaza tend to be, this is an illuminating work.

Zine Description

An earnest reflection upon universal suffering through the telescopic traumas of Gaza. Drones light the night, replacing shooting stars, while residents shelter in the bareness of dust and sky. Words of compassion, of deep contemplation, roam the wreckage in search of answers. Logic leads to humanity, its pride and stubbornness, its destructive capacity to walk the earth like a breed of monsters, incapable of witnessing the future because they bury it in Gaza with their own hands.

About the Author

Mohammed Al-Bardawili is a Palestinian writer, born in 1998, who has lived through multiple wars in Gaza. He completed his studies in English Literature in 2022 at Al-Azhar University, Gaza.

He has worked to support his family of seven, serving as a digital marketer and content writer in both Arabic and English. He lost his job during the war and continues to struggle, striving for the wellbeing of himself, his family, and his community.

Driven by a determination to amplify the voices of his people, Mohammed seeks to carry their stories beyond the borders of this small city, hoping that the world will hear, witness, and share the weight of the suffering that burdens Gaza.

A belated congratulations to Samar AlGhussein on the release of her zine, The Fifth Shadow of the Sun. This original work of poetry and art is the third zine in our 2026 catalogue. A splash of yellow in a bouquet of flowers makes this cover stand out. Of course, it can also be printed in monochrome.

Zine Description

The Fifth Shadow of the Sun is a collection of poems written during the genocide in Gaza. While my soul was besieged by death from all sides, I saw poetry as our only means of immortalizing our lives. As I try to escape a reality riddled with destruction, we see that death is a plague that has infected even our vivid imaginations. Therefore, I share some of my poems, not only as a witness to the genocide, but also as a survivor of death.

Samar Al Ghussein is a Palestinian writer and poet from Gaza, interested in literature and all different forms of art. Her works focus on describing the beauty hidden in tragedy. Samar considers poetry a means to immortalize our lives. She participated in an anthology in Italy, and her works have been published in several magazines such as MPT Magazine, Al-Ayyam Al-Arabiya Magazine, and Arablit Magazine.

Congratulations, Bilal Ahmed and his team, on the release of this incredible new zine! Once again, Bilal offers profound insights on the Palestinian experience and the human condition. In Gaza, personhood is devoured by patterns of occupational violence and reduced to its core. Illustrations mirror themes of emotional containment and crushing experiences through depictions of bodies compressed into box-shaped dwellings.

Zine Description

Originally written in Arabic, this personal story captures the poignancy of strength in Palestinian society and thirsts after the “spring of tenderness,” embodied in motherhood. Deprived of existence, trapped within a brutal containment system, the soul finds its strength in tender bonds that break without warning.

An Arabic version is forthcoming.

About the Author

A university student from Gaza, Bilal writes about life, people, and the experiences of his city. His words express hope despite hardship and carry genuine emotions drawn from daily life in Palestine.
